What is Mental Health?

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is the state of well-being in which people understand their own potential, are capable of dealing with life’s stresses and challenges, form positive relationships with others, are able to contribute something to their community, and can work productively.

If a person experiences problems with mental health, his or her mood, thinking, and behavior can be affected greatly. There are numerous influences associated with mental health problems. These include biological factors, family history of psychiatric disorders, traumatic life experiences, or the use of alcohol, drugs, and other substances.

Early Signs of a Mental Health Problem

The following behaviors or feelings can be an early warning sign of a mental health problem:

  1. Having low energy
  2. Feeling of hopelessness or worthlessness
  3. Excessive use of alcohol or drugs
  4. Isolating oneself from other people
  5. Having unexplained aches and pains
  6. Thinking of harming oneself or others
  7. Inability to perform day-to-day routines
  8. Eating or sleeping too much or too little
  9. Unusually irritable, edgy, scared, or worried
  10. Having persistent thoughts that one can’t get out of his or her head
  11. Inability to experience fun and pleasure from normally fun activities
  12. Experiencing severe mood swings that cause relationship problems

Preserving One’s Mental Health

Maintaining good mental health can be achieved in many ways. This often includes connecting with others, getting adequate sleep, learning effective coping skills, staying positive, exercising regularly, growing in one’s faith, and seeking professional help if the need arises.

What Is Mental Illness?

You might hear the phrase “mental illness” or “mental disorder” but what does that mean? Let’s look at the definition of a mental illness. A mental illness is a health problem that greatly affects a person’s perception and behavior.

Some of the most common mental illnesses include:

  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, and/or PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Bipolar Disorder
