Is ADHD real?

September 11, 2016 by Brian Briscoe, M.D. ADHD, ADHD in Adults, ADHD in Children and Adolescents 0 comments

Is ADHD Real?

Many Christians have been taught to believe that ADHD is not a biological disorder but rather a lack of discipline or will and that persons who struggle with ADHD are just lazy, slothful, or undisciplined.

This is simply untrue.

ADHD is a biological illness involving deficits in the function of the prefrontal cortex and related neuronal pathways involved in processing environmental stimuli. These impaired networks affect both control of attention and inhibitory control networks, which is why a person with ADHD may be very distractible and may start many projects at one time but never see them through to completion.

People with ADHD may struggle to “get things done,” but this is not because of laziness or personal sin.

A number of treatments are available to treat ADHD, many of which have been proven to be very effective. These include medications, behavioral therapy, and ADHD coaching.

As I tell all my patients, you have to be careful about what you read on the internet about ADHD.
Some reputable resources on the subject include:

https://www.nami.org/Learn-More/Mental-Health-Conditions/ADHD
http://psychcentral.com/disorders/adhd/ (ADHD in Adults)
http://psychcentral.com/disorders/childhood-adhd/ (ADHD in Children)

At Next Step 2 Mental Health, we serve as a safe resource for Christians within our community who are struggling. It is our goal to provide the highest level of care in a way that honors your Christian beliefs. If you, or someone whom you love, are struggling with ADHD we want to help you.

Call us at 502.907.5908 or email us at info@ADHD.doctor to book an appointment with one of our physicians or therapists.

If you don’t get help from us, seek help from someone.

Life and the future can be much brighter with treatment.
